Deep Hole Drilling Stock Prep: Bar Cutting and End Facing

A rough-sawed bar end walks on entry, breaks tools, and produces scrap. Proper end preparation takes minutes per bar. Skipping it costs broken gun drills and scrapped parts. The preparation step is not optional.

For best results, cut bars to length on a band saw or cold saw, leaving 3–5 mm excess for end facing. Then face the end square in a lathe before drilling.

Can I drill without end preparation on soft materials?

Not recommended. Even in aluminium, a rough end causes drill skidding on entry, which produces an oversize or misaligned hole start.
