Lubrication is the most routine maintenance task on a deep hole drilling machine, and also the most frequently neglected. A guideway that runs dry for one shift loses positioning accuracy. Warning: Do not use hydraulic oil on guideways. Hydraulic oil lacks the tackiness and extreme pressure additives that guideway oil has. Using hydraulic oil on guideways causes rapid wear, stick-slip motion, and eventual loss of positioning accuracy.

What type of oil should I use on deep hole drilling machine guideways?

Use ISO VG 68–100 way oil with extreme pressure (EP) and tackiness additives. Way oil is specifically formulated to prevent stick-slip at low feed rates and to adhere to vertical surfaces — properties that hydraulic oil does not have. Do not substitute hydraulic oil for way oil.

How often should I lubricate the spindle bearings?

Grease-packed spindle bearings should be relubricated every 3–12 months depending on speed and operating hours. High-speed spindles need more frequent lubrication. Automatic oil-air systems require continuous monitoring of oil consumption. Follow the spindle manufacturer's recommended interval.
